Workshop Overview

On March 30, 2024, we hosted a transformative community workshop, convening organizers, scholars, activists, technologists, and students to reimagine technology's role in advancing just futures. This gathering, part of the Responsible Computing for Just Futures Project, sought to spark dialogues served as a platform for participants to connect with radical visions for a future governed by principles of equity, shared leadership, mutual respect, and sustainable stewardship of resources and the land. We eagerly anticipate the transformative outcomes that will emerge from this collaborative effort.

The day commenced with an incisive keynote conversation between Claudia Johnson and Miguel Willis, exploring the evolution of the public interest technology field. Their discussion illuminated key milestones and envisioned future growth, setting a reflective and aspirational tone for the day's proceedings.

Workshop Themes

Following the keynote, the 45 participants divided into breakout sessions, each designed to tackle crucial themes:

1. The Role Systems Play in Our Technology Involvements: This session examined how systemic structures influence technology usage and development, stressing the importance of understanding these dynamics to drive meaningful change.
2. Frameworks for Transformative Change: Participants explored various frameworks that can guide the creation of transformative and equitable technological solutions.
3. Technological Solutions to Localized Problems: This session focused on identifying and developing tech solutions tailored to address specific local challenges.

The event concluded with a powerful storytelling session. Participants shared their experiences and successes in using technology to empower their communities. This session not only deepened participants' networks but also provided a space for mutual inspiration and support. The day ended on a high note with a reception featuring delicious food and live West African music, celebrating the collaborative spirit and diverse cultural contributions of the participants.

Key discussions throughout the day included:

• The Roles Technology Can Play in Accountability of Government Services: Participants discussed how technology can enhance transparency and accountability in services like SEPTA and public benefits.
• Algorithms and Housing Justice: The group explored how algorithms can both perpetuate and mitigate housing injustices.
• Surveillance and Its Intersections with Public Transit and Criminal Justice: This discussion focused on the complex relationships between surveillance technologies, public transit systems, and the criminal justice system.
